Satsuki is a new boutique sushi restaurant in Calgary, located in the walkable Kensington neighbourhood.

Mixing contemporary Japanese style with an emphasis on traditional Japanese culture, Satsuki brings guests together for an omakase experience unlike any other. We worked with Satsuki to design their brand from the ground up.

A logo that lights the way

When it comes to Japanese cuisine, the best kept secrets are often found wedged between buildings in a back alley somewhere.

The design for the Satsuki logo is inspired by the traditional Japanese lamps often seen illuminating such establishments, offering a warm and cozy beacon to curious and hungry travellers or local regulars alike.

Initially, the logo was designed for the same restaurant—which had a different name—but luckily, the concept survived the change, and now sits proudly outside the restaurant, illuminated cozily in backlit fluorescent lighting along one of Calgary's most popular neighbourhoods.

Brand Guidelines

Traditionally inspired, unconventionally designed.

Satsuki's luxurious and offbeat colour palette is unusual for a Japanese restaurant, and serves to separate it from the ever-increasing quantity of Japanese restaurants in Calgary.

Coupled with hand-drawn illustrations and patterns that draw from traditional aspects of Japanese culture and a focus on calligraphic typography, the visual identity is a cohesive reflection of what makes Japan and it's cuisine so special.
